Youth leadership training begins at the Troop Level.  The Scoutmaster is responsible for training new youth leaders.  These publications are very useful for new youth leaders:

Youth Training.

There are many BSA training opportunities for scouts to build upon their leadership skills.  Piedmont Council offers some courses within the Council and the Piedmont Council also has cooperative understandings with neighboring councils that permit us to attend their training programs.   Some courses can even be taken on-line.

YOUTH TRAINING:

"NYLT"--National Youth Leadership Training

Previously this training was called "Brownsea" or "JLT" (Junior Leadership Training).  This is leadership skills training for scouts.  It addresses key leadership skills that a scout could draw upon as a leader both in scouting (i.e. Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, etc.) and in life (school, sports, groups, etc.).  It is offered in different formats.  For example it is offered in the summer as a one-week outdoor experience.  It can also be offered during the school year scheduled over two weekend sessions.   Many troops encourage, and some require, this as a prerequisite for leadership positions.  Even if it is not required it is worthwhile opportunity for scouts.  Several of our scouts have been to this course and highly recommended it to others.  Several local councils  put on this training during the year.  Here are some links.

NAYLE (National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience) is a brand new program.  It takes place at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and is the next step for youth training beyond NYLT (see above).  There was an article about NAYLE in Scouting Magazine in the March-April 2007 issue.  Here is a copy of the NAYLE article pdf
