Adult Training.
"Every
Scout Deserves a Trained Leader"
There are many BSA training opportunities for both adult leaders and youth to build upon their leadership and outdoors skills. Piedmont Council offers courses and the Piedmont Council also has cooperative understandings with neighboring councils that permit us to attend their training programs. Some courses can even be taken on-line.
Youth Protection Training
All volunteers are expected to complete Youth Protection training. It is available online here: Youth Protection Training Site
As a volunteer you are expected to complete this training within 90
days of assuming a leadership position. There is also an overview
of youth protection from the scout's point of view incluced in the
front of the Scout Handbook. ASM Training - Steps and Dates
Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters
are considered trained
when they have completed the following courses;
The Piedmont Council offered the ASM courses in the Fall of 2007. Below are the dates and links to the Council webpage. You can also take them from a neighboring council if you miss this.
Fast Start (may be completed online)
New Leader Essentials (1.5 hour introduction)
Scoutmaster/ASM Specific Leader Training (3 modules of 2.5 hrs each)--7.5 hrs total.
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (1.5 day - covers skills in Scout Handbook)
Sept 23, 2007 (past) (Sun-10-6)- ASM Training Part 1, in Piedmont Council office. Part 1 is New Leader Essentials plus ASM Specific Leader Training modules. Link to Piedmont Council Calendar.
Oct 26-28, 2007 (past) (Fri-Sun)- ASM Training Part 2, at Hawk Ridge. Part 2 is the Outdoor Leader Skills module including camping out with your class.
San Francisco Bay Area Council ASM Training Dates:

new SFBAC web site shows SM and ASM training on Sat.,
Feb. 9 beginning at 7:30 a.m. (Parts 1-3) and the
Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills (Part 1) on Wed., Feb.
27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheriff's Training Facility,
6289 Madigan Road, Dublin and on Friday-Sunday, Mar
7-9 at Los Mochos (Part 2). Contact: John Bellamy

2. Tres Ranchos (San Leandro, Castro Valley): SM and
ASM Training, Sat. April 26 8:00 a.m.; Intro to
Outdoor Leader Skills for adults: Thursday, May 1 and

3. Golden Gate District (SF): SM and ASM Training,
Sat. March 8, 8:00 a.m. at St. Finn Bar, 415 Edna St.
(@Hearst), SF; Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills,
Sat.-Sun., April 12-13; 8:00 a.m. China Camp State
Park (about 45 minutes from Piedmont). Contact:

University of Scouting ("UOS")

UOS is a one-day extravaganza of over many classes on a wide variety of topics for Scout Leaders involved in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and/or Venturing.
UOS - SFBAC - there was a University of Scouting event put on by the S.F. Bay Area Council on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Foothill High School in Pleasanton. Follow this link for info: 2008 SFBAC UOS
This is an annual event
and next year's date is January
26, 2009. UOS - Pacific Skyline Council
- this event combined a UOS for adults and Merit Badge Midway for scouts.
Was last held on Saturday February

.Wood Badge
Wood Badge is advanced leadership
training for adult scout
leaders. It takes place over two long weekends and is generally
offered annually in September/October. Piedmont Scouting adults
have
participated as attendees and staff at recent Wood Badge courses put on
by North Coast Cluster and San Francisco Council. Wood Badge - North Coast Cluster 2008 - brochure
(2/29/08)Piedmont is one of three councils sponsoring this leadership course. Only put on once a year usually. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Two weekends: Aug 30-Sept 1 and Sept 13-15, 2008. Flyer is linked above.
