Kayak Outing.....

Catapult

Summary of Kayaking Trip

By Michael D, Troop 11 Historian

Kayaking, catapults, otters, sea lions, wet suits, and rain awaited the scouts of Troop 11 as they left on Friday morning, November 10 for a Veterans’ Day weekend of fun…and rain.  adrian

After arriving at a campsite in the New Brighton State Park, the boys set up camp and ate lunch.  Following lunch, the scouts had 30 minutes of preparation for the pioneering project, constructing a catapult, and launching objects into the ocean.

“We walked down to the beach and spent about two hours total, setting up, launching and taking down the catapult,” said Campout Senior Patrol Leader Alan L.
The scouts then had dinner and rested for the activities for the next day.  At around 7:30 AM all of the boys woke up, ate breakfast, and cleaned up the campsite.  However, the persistent rain made this a little difficult.

“It rained on Saturday, which made packing up and eating a little more…‘interesting’” Alan L. said.

Following packing everything into cars and doing a campsite sweep, the scouts drove to Moss Landing to kayak with Monterey Bay Kayaks.

“The rain kind of dulled everyone’s spirits,” said Will C. “But, once we started Building Catapultkayaking [it stopped raining and] everyone had a lot of fun.”

The scouts got into wetsuits, chose kayak partners, and set off kayaking with guides around 8-8:30 to go kayaking for a couple of hours.  They kayaked around in the Elkhorn Slough (a slough is a body of water with mud banks), where they saw sea lions, pelicans, otters, and other wildlife.

Among the activity and excitement, both Will C.s capsized their kayak and fell into the water.  Luckily, it was no longer raining.

“We both wanted to go extremely fast, and so as we were rowing, at one point we Will and Willboth leaned to the same side and we fell into the water”  said Will C.

There were some injuries, however.  Ian C. injured his leg after running into a metal grill, and Matt M. got chickenpox shortly after returning from the trip.  Luckily, no one else has gotten sick.  Despite these mishaps the trip was a success.

“It was definitely a success.” Will C. said.  “My favorite part was the kayaking because it was fun to look at the scenery, and the sea lions and otters.”

This was the second time Troop 11 went on the kayaking trip in recent years, and according to Alan L., it may not be the last
